Why weight loss for men is different

By Tony Vassallo

The first issue us guys face is Ego. Tony encourages men to realize asking for help is not a sign of weakness but in fact the ultimate a sign of strength. Refusing to ask for directions is one thing- playing roulette with our health is scary scenario.

Another major difference between weight loss for men is societal acceptance. Although there has been a slight shift towards men’s appearance and health in the last several years it’s still more accepted for a male to be overweight or obese than a female.

Think about the way we still use the term big guy, which is a diplomatically correct way of saying fat guy. Many wouldn’t think twice of saying Hey Big Guy how ya doing?

At the same time I have had many of my male clients tell me how they feel being overweight has caused them to be overlooked towards career development and financial advancement because they are overweight. Some have even shared how they many have been treated differently in person with clients than over the telephone when they see them for the first time.

Tony himself experienced the bias, it wasn’t until he lost the weight he realized to the extent of bias exists towards obese people. Strangers tend to smile, say hello and make eye contact with him as a slender fellow, opposed to the days he was carrying an additional 130 pounds when people tended to look away.

A critical element that mainly impacts men more than woman is men tend to suffer from many more metabolic health issues with the extra weight compared to woman. Metabolic syndrome is a group of health problems that include too much fat around the waist, elevated blood pressure, high triglycerides, elevated blood sugar, and low HDL cholesterol. Together, this group of health problems increases a male’s risk of heart attack, stroke, and diabetes.

While ladies carry excess weight in the hips and buttocks guys tend to have lots of visceral fat in abdominal cavity. This fat surrounds many of the vital organs (pancreas, liver, and intestines) and literally suffocates these organs contributing to lifestyle diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, raised blood pressure, stroke, colorectal cancer and elevated risk of a heart attack.

Guys who are obese tend to have a much larger neck circumference which directly impacts the likelihood of suffering from sleep apnea. A neck circumference of 17” or higher would indicate an elevated risk of sleep apnea which can have a significant impact on your ability to sleep soundly. Many men who have a neck size of 17” require the use of CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine. People with sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, up to 100 times an hour in severe cases. This means the brain – and the rest of the body – may not get enough oxygen. This creates a viscious cycle as lack of REM sleep leads to craving simple carbohydrates as these foods serve for a quick blip of energy followed by an energy crash, leading to weight gain. In addition to the medical concerns, many men will snore very loudly to the point it becomes unbearable for their partner to sleep with them.

The other concern with guys who carry excess weight is the impact on their joints. It’s basic physics: the more weight we carry the more pressure on our feet, ankles, knees, hips and back. In fact, every extra pound we carry puts an extra 4 to 7 pounds of pressure on all of our joints. Even a 5% weight loss will contribute towards better health.

An overlooked health related concern of men’s excess weight is the impact on libido. Yep that’s right - excess weight can cause erectile dysfunction.  Not to mention the lack of energy and stamina that impacts the sexual relationship with their partner.

Final note on the impact of excess weight on our health is more and more data is confirming the relationship between excess weight and mental health. Not to mention much of the fast food, fried food, processed food, refined simple carbohydrates and confections that are being consumed by much of the population referred to as the Standard American Diet SAD is contributing towards men’s depression, risk of dementia, Alzheimer’s, OCD, and anxiety. Many of the medications prescribed to combat mental health further fuel weight gain. Hence why the MODA Weight Loss Meal Plan focuses on a whole foods diet that aids mental and microbial health.

Over the last several years Tony has helped many men reduce or eliminated medications and improve there overall physical and mental health. Check Out Carlos Story

Another difference for weight loss for men is they think they can sweat it off. Far from it – weight loss solely takes place in the kitchen not the gym. It’s what we eat, or as important, what we no longer eat that trims a guy’s waistline. In fact excessive exercise can actually heighten cravings. I encourage guys to stay out of the gym and seek less intense activity, such as a good brisk walk. Not to mention someone who is obese or morbidly attempting to run or jog is not a good idea to apply additional pressure on frail joints. Check out George’s Story

Next major difference for weight loss for men, is most programs are geared towards women. Many weight loss meal plans are designed for women with some minor tweaks for men. While many weight loss meal plans are restrictive (eating twigs and leaves), require calories counting, or outright starvation not at MODA. The MODA Ultimate Way to Eat Meal Guide is geared towards weight loss for men. Tony has devoted the last several years developing a meal plan that is flexible and sustainable for men. The MODA Weight Loss Meal Plan does not eliminate any macronutrients. It includes a heathy balance of protein, complex carbohydrates, and dietary fats. The weight loss meal plan focuses on food quality over quantity at proper intervals.

Lastly, guys prefer to be chat and work with a male weight loss coach or mentor and who himself has been in their shoes. This is what persuaded Tony to leave a 15-year career in the IT industry creating an outlet for men’s weight loss.  Contact Tony today to learn more.
